Youk hammered out four hits including a three run blast to break the game open, just in time really as Josh Beckett stumbled in the fifth before getting a relatively straightforward sixth. The difference maker this season is the bullpen and when the Sox have the lead going into the late innings, you have to fancy them to win and this was no different; Okajima, Saito and Papelbon closed the door again, combining for a 3-2-0-0-4 line.
Big Papi got himself a couple of hits but still only has one extra base effort on the season, whilst Ellsbury and Pedroia, slowly improving in the last couple of games, went 2-9 as the early season struggles went on.
Three straight wins for the Sox now and Jon Lester up next followed by Justin Masterson tomorrow in place of the ‘fatigued’ Dice-K. Lester has not been great so far and a good showing this evening would do much to calm my worries that the big lefty is suffering from last seasons exertions.
