First of all, apologies for my extended absence; suffice to say I had no choice.
Since last I posted, David Ortiz has refuted mine, and everybody else’s, suggestion that he was finished, hitting ten home runs during that period and whilst he may never again be the hitter he was between 2004-2007, he is proving quite aptly that there’s a whole lotta life in the old dog just yet.
So with the Large Father back in action and Sox atop the division, all is well yes? Well in a fashion; the rotation, aside from the DiceMan, has sorted itself out with Beckett and Lester back to their foremost dominating form and with Wake and Penny doing their upmost to match them the starting pitching is looking pretty damn fine if you ask me, so long as John Smoltz gets it going at any rate.
The concerns about Jonathan Papelbon seem unfounded to me since while the Bot is walking more guys this year and hasn’t been as dominating as in past seasons, it’s pretty harsh to say he’s having a bad season; it’s just that he’s been so good in every other season.
Having said that I’d hang off giving him a long term extension, though I would anyway since multiyear deals for relievers are a pretty stupid idea; you just can’t tell how they’re going to perform two or three seasons from now, look at BJ Ryan and Justin Speier for evidence of that, neither were worth the mega deals they got and whilst Pap might well be, it’s just not worth finding out, especially since we’ve got the likes of Daniel Bard who could be just as good in a couple of seasons time.
Anyway that’s it for now, I’m easing myself back into my normal routine and that involves watching Jon Lester’s performance from last night; to think I was worried about him at the start of the year!
